The Last Resort Artist Retreat residency is dedicated to providing a sanctuary where Black creatives can rejuvenate and thrive. Designed to foster renewal and reflection, the retreat offers a curated experience that encourages participants to step away from distractions and embrace the transformative potential of new perspectives. By prioritizing space for rest, creativity, and exploration, the residency empowers artists to reconnect with their vision, nurture their craft, and uncover the lasting benefits of intentional withdrawal from the demands of everyday life.
The Last Resort Artist Retreat invites five residents for five month long cohorts - creatives occupying space in the visual, sound-based, movement-based, culinary, and literary arts, as well as entrepreneurs whose interests seek to enrich the arts. Like many, we believe the creative community elevates society, and to foster this, we find leisure and communion with others a natural transmitting process for human growth. The residency is by invitation only, through recommendations from notable practitioners and advisors in the related areas of discipline. We also welcome allies and supporters from the surrounding community to scheduled programming, including exhibitions, performances, screenings and lectures. The Last Resort Artist Retreat also believes in collaborating and supporting other like-minded organizations in Baltimore’s local community as well as national and international cultural producers. The retreat:
Prioritizes relaxation as well as meaningful incubation.
Engages with community where minds can thrive and find reprieve from the daily grind to expand creative freedom by putting leisure first.
Partners with qualified practitioners to lead complementary services, such as yoga, meditation, and acupuncture.
Emphasizes complementary holistic therapy exchange, while fostering the lasting benefits of withdrawing and seizing possibilities endowed by new perspectives.
Offers four-week residencies that provide studio space, lodging and meals, a stipend and plenty of green space to enjoy.

Our by-invitation monthly Long Run dinner series brings together a curated group of cultural producers from an array of disciplines. They are local, national, and international contributors, as well as allies who support essential strategies centered around developing communities in need as a means of strengthening the wider audiences we serve. The phrase “long run” refers to committed investment, and in this case, all parties involved are consistently uplifting our communities worldwide. With that in mind, guests engage in productive conversation while enjoying the talents of the highlighted chef’s menu and curated table scape. Each intimate group of participants is encouraged to share thoughts surrounding leadership and resources that foster a broader connection - including topics of concern - while gathered around an extended dining table at The Last Resort Artist Retreat. Grounded in a love of community and food, we see this as an opportunity for discussing everything from politics to sharing recipes, all while breaking bread together.

Our Focus Residency invites one visual artist to spend four to five weeks at The Last Resort Artist Retreat working independently in January/February. The resident artist can invite one guest per weekend to visit them as a way for them to be in community with individuals who inspire them. We believe that this unique opportunity allows artists to become comfortable creating space for convening during their stay, curating meaningful exchanges while defining their own work/rest balance.
