This exhibit features the work of four Baltimore-based photographers alongside the literary work of writers from Zora’s Den. Fourteen images, depicting scenes from African villages to inner city streets, from pastoral vistas to moments of passionate protest, are paired with the poetry and prose of fourteen Black women writers.
This show invites the spectator to examine the role of images paired with words in storytelling. The new narratives created with the use of these photographs as visual prompts yields a new story, and a new perspective on the image seen. They display the scope of how images are viewed individually, and inspire a range of perspectives. They serve as the visual catalyst for the words offered by writers of Zora’s Den who interpret the pictures through their stories and poems.
As another element, visitors can access audio narration of select literary pieces, adding a component of sound to the overall collaboration. The show engages images, words and sound to help explore the possibilities of imagination and lead to the subjective positing of What’s the Story? Here, the witnesses participate and decide. This exhibit features the work of four Baltimore-based photographers alongside the literary work of writers from Zora’s Den.
